Il tipo 8741 può essere configurato come misuratore (MFM) o regolatore di portata massica (MFC) ed è destinato all'uso in una rete büS o CANopen. La tecnologia di rete büS si basa sulla rete CAN ed è stata sviluppata da Bürkert appositamente per le applicazioni con più control loops che vengono gestiti tramite Industrial Ethernet o altri bus di campo. L'unità di controllo del sistema (SCU, System Control Unit) tipo ME2X converte la comunicazione Ethernet del cliente nel protocollo büS proprietario che gestisce tutti gli strumenti collegati. La comunicazione degli strumenti può essere commutata tra büS e CANopen. Di conseguenza il tipo 8741 può essere integrato anche in reti CANopen preesistenti. Il tipo 8741 misura (MFM) o regola (MFC) la portata massica dei gas con l'ausilio di un sensore MEMS. Il sensore è in contatto diretto con il gas e pertanto ha tempi di risposta rapidissimi, nell'ordine di poche centinaia di millisecondi. Inoltre la misura è indipendente dalle fluttuazioni di pressione o temperatura. L'MFC/MFM può essere calibrato con due diversi gas.
